She doesn't like to have her feet touched and thinks it's a game, any tips?My dog's nails are super long! I got some clippers to cut them, but she's so hyper and won't hold still.
Hey there. Make the nail clipping as pleasant as possible. Please note that ';pleasant'; for the dog will most likely NOT mean being held down.
Go to a professional who is going to be kind and use treats. Watch what the groomer does, and help her by rewarding your dog with treats for letting her clip your dog's nails. A confident professional can easily show you how to do this and make nail clipping positive for your dog.
Trying to do it yourself when you don't know what you're doing will probably not work. It's worth the $ to go learn how to do it from a pro. Good luck!

You need to have somebody hold her down, but dont be to aggressive. Let the person holding her down pet her so she will take some attention off of you. Do not rush the job because you can cut to much off and make a bloody mess.
Nails are very sensitive and can Bleed very easy .If your dog has sensitive feet take her to a professional for the clipping.A good groomer or the Vet will be able to distract her and cut them .if they get too long they can cause her to injure herself by snagging them and tearing also scratching you and other things. The fee should not be over5-10 Dollars. It will be worth it for your safety and hers.Good luck!!!!
Places that do grooming and most vets usually will do this for pretty cheap, my vet only charges 8.00 and the pet groomer charges ten, you are better off to have someone do this because you can hurt her very easy if you aren't experienced at this. I'm telling you this because years ago I thought whats so hard I can do it and hurt my beloved friend a little bit.
Take her to the professional. You don't want to make her scared and you don't want to make a mistake she will be in pain if you cut the nail wrong. It is not that expensive and worth not injurying her.
try training them to lay down and let you rubb them on the stomach and do one paw at a time while she's preoccupied and reward her with treats after you clip each foot. eventually they figure out that getting nails cliped leads to rewards. but if they are really really long you need to go get them done. the quick grows with the nail and if you cut that the dog will never let you cut them again.
If it is a small dog and you don't want to take it to a vet or something just to clip the nails, wrap it in a towel or blanket (not tight enough to hurt it, just enough so it can't move as freely) and have someone hold on to it while you cut the nails.
But, like others have said, if the nails are really long you want to make sure you don't cut the nerves. So if you can't tell where the nerves end, you should take it to the vet or something.
Have the same problem with mini Dachshund,we now take her to pet smart they are very good at doing this and its only $8.50 to do.You have to be careful when cutting the nails if you cut to short you cause her to bleed. So if she is that hyper I would let a professional do it.
Use a dremel it is quicker and there is a less chance you will cut the quick, actually you won't cut it at all. Or you could have someone hold her down, while you cut.
I had the same problem with my dog, I ended up taking her to a groomer and had them cut for $8.00. It was definitely worth having someone else do it, they had the tools to do it right. So I would just take her and have someone else do it.
Take her for a walk first to get her in a calm submissive state and then do it quickly when you get done with your walk. The other option (which I choose) is take her to a groomer. My dog doesn't seem to mind when the groomer does anything to him but let me approach him with clippers, brush or shampoo and he isn't happy!
Take her to a groomer. If the nails are extremely long, the quick is farther down than you think, and you will cut blood vessels and nerves. The dog will then associate nail clipping with pain and be uncooperative forever.
Once your dog is clipped a couple of times and exercised on pavement regularly (that will keep the nails under control), the quick moves back up the nail, making it easier for you to clip the nails safely in the future. And get a helper to feed litttle treats and help hold her while you clip.
We had the same issue.
First, your dog needs his nails trimmed on a regular basis. If you can't do it now, bring him to a groomer so they can do it. It's VERY important that this happen and not very expensive. Our groomer only charges $10 for a nail trim.
In the mean time, start handling his paws a lot. When he's snoozing, when he's in a sit stay...just keep your hands on his paws all the time. If he tries to mouth your hands when you are doing it, give him a correction. Don't try to touch his paws when he's exicted. It just wont work.
It will take time, but you need to manage his excitement and condition him to having his paws touched.
take them to a groomer, not worth cutting to short and bleeding for a long time
Take her to a professional if you slip with those cutters the dog could be hurting. The professional knows how to handle even the hyper dogs if she is really good!
I have a Westie that wont let me even come close to him with nail trimmers... I quickly learned to just let a professional do it. It doesnt cost much at all and it is WELL worth the money!
take it to the vet and spend 10 bucks cheapo
well just get someone to hold her and you can be able to cut her nails...
i cut all my dogs i have my boyfriend help me with my 2 chihuahuas, 2 chihuahua/rat terrier mixed/ and my rottweiler just lays there when i cut her nails and my german shepherd i just put my leg around her and she lays down....
The vet can clip her nails for a very reasonable fee or sometimes free. If they are super long then you have to be careful not to cut too much or they will bleed. Dogs have veins that run into their nails and can grow longer with the nail. If you still want to do it yourself, file the nails first. This will cause the vein to retract just enough for you to begin clipping a little at a time. Hope this helps.
get someone to hold her.. and do it quick
you could do it whilst she is asleep, but make sure she is asleep, otherwise she may lash out instantly and attack you!
Put her to sleep?
