I'm just curious... I have a scratching pad and all that fun stuff. However, his nails appear to be ';out'; when he's just laying around. Would it be typical of a cat to cry whenever they're too long... does it get painful? If so, why doesn't the scratching pad take care of the length?Do cats cry if their claws / nails get too long?
It doesn't hurt a cat to have long nails, unless they get so long they have trouble walking around. If they hit the ground with every step, trim them down. I once saw a cat whose nails had grown so long, they'd curved around and were buried in his paw pads. He was a sweet old thing with terrible owners.
But you should probably be trimming your cat's nails every few weeks. They can get kitty litter (and feces or urine clumps) stuck in their nail beds, which can cause infection. Their nails can also grow quite thick in diameter if you (or they) don't keep them trimmed, and that makes them even more difficult to eventually trim down.Do cats cry if their claws / nails get too long?
you can clip them you know. Just dont get to close to the skin. Then he would cry.
Cats do cry when their nails are too long this is because Their nails dig into their paw and that is very painful for a cat, Also a Scratching pad is meant to help the cat by stopping it from the nails digging into their paws. By the way if you cut the cats nails too long then that will cause them to cry because they use their claws as a stress relief so when the scratch or something they then feel carmer
i dont think it would be painful. but you can try trimming them. i have like a cat nail trimmer thingy that i think i got at the vets. just dont cut them much!
Maybe. If their nails get too long they will catch on things like rugs and they will pull and cause pain the same way our nails would if they are pulled upwards. Cats and Dogs don't have any nerves in the ends of their nails. If your cats' nails appear ';out';, then they are too long. When they are laying down, their claws should be retracted and not visible except for the do claw.
You should be keeping his nails cut back if they are catching on anything. Use a cat nail clipper-not a finger nail clipper! You can buy them at any pet store. Your local store may or may not carry them. Keep his nails cut back about a quarter to a half inch depending on how long they are- no more.
Your cat will cry for a minute or two afterwards. His nails might appear cracked but that is normal.
As mentioned by another poster, in older cats the claws can grow so long that they curl back onto themselves, and then cut into the paw pad. That is painful. Most cats do a fine job of removing the excess length with a scratching pad. Older cats sometimes neglect it.
But think like a cat, especially cat like reflexes. They can move in a split second, and need their claws for traction. So the claw will be out to a certain extent at all times. Saves time. Also, a cat is really proud of his 'weapons' and doesn't mind displaying them.
If you are concerned, get a special cat nail clipper at any pet store (they are inexpensive) and snip off the very tip of his claws. Be very careful not to get into any darker area of the claw. Just snip off the sharp end. Unclear? I have posted a link.
I try and trim the nails on two of my cats on a regular basis; saves me from pain when they decide to knead me and also is a bit more gentle on the furniture, even through they do not scratch furniture.
actually... cats nail should not get too long because they take care of there own nails. They do that by scratching on your furniture, posts even on your walls sometimes. If you dont want them to scratch on your furniture and want to insure that their nails dont get to long simply buy them a SCRATCHING POST. Those post permits your cats to keep their nails short and the best part is that they do NOT cost allot. If your not sure what a scratching post is just ask family member , friends or visit your local pet store!!!!!.
HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!!
I don't think it hurts them. You can get a special nail clip for animals and cut them your self or get him declawed, if your worried about his claws getting to long.
Cats claws can get too long, it will only hurt them if they grow into the pad or if they get caught in carpet etc. They don't necessarily shorten by use of cat scratchers but they are useful in helping them to shed the old sheath. It is generally a problem that effects cats that mainly stay indoors rather than cats that are active outside climbing trees etc.
